Not just a ordinary car sale !!

I’ll try and keep this as short to the point as possible. My 4x4 car gearbox went so it got towed to a specialist transmission garage. The garage told me the car had a shed load of faults and would cost me around £4000 to fix. I told them forget it so I agreed to pay for the diagnostic check and leave the works. At same time I asked them any suggestions on what to do with the vehicle? They said someone offered £500 . So I turned it down and said the doors alone scrap are worth more than that. They then asked how much would I want for it and they’ll ask around. 3k I replied. Fast forward. One of the garage owners called me and said he’s had a look around and it will to take it off me from 2500 he restore it over a few months. We agreed to meet. The log book said it a cat s . I didn’t know this ( I have had it for over a year- previous owner can’t be traced ) I didn’t notice the front bottom notes. So he call me back and says reduce the pricebecause you didn’t tell me it was a S . (Fair enough I didn’t do my due diligence) or take the car back off him and pay for the parts he has ordered for the car because it’s on the ramp £2600  ( they took it apart and ordered parts ( which can’t be returned ) -  and worked on it without telling me and money exchanging hands .) so had a think of the weekend and called him Monday to tell him keep the car I don’t want it what a headache! He tells me he doesn’t want to car neither (that’s on the ramp) unless I sweeten it and tell him what’s the least am prepared to accept for it. Or pay 3100 (now ) and return the car back to me. What should I do?  What are my rights  in this mess . Only wanted the gearbox fixed!!!! It sooo stressful . FYI Car value would be only 2000 it think . Help!

Tell him the least you would take is £2000? Or negotiate?

If it is worth £2000, then tell him you will accept £2000.

If he refuses, then tell him he needs to put it back together as it was and you will collect it.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I've got one of those sitting outside my window at the moment (goosed gearbox)  been like that for a year +  I wanted £2k, offered it to the bin man for £500 last week.  Still there

Just speak to him and come to an amicable settlement you might not be happy but better gone than gathering dust and one less hassle in your life.

Personally I think valuing a scrap car at £2k is a little bit optimistic.

your valuations seem a bit inconsistent. I would agree with the advice given and either ask for £2000, or for the vehicle to be returned to you in the condition it was in prior.

I am a bit confused as to why a vehicle would be handed over to someone who’s been making alterations to it, if no money has changed hands? If the vehicle is still at the garage, on the basis that they were repairing it but then on your instruction you’d asked them to find a buyer for it, it would be seriously remiss of them to let someone tinker with it without the owners agreement.

Doesn’t make sense at all, unless I’ve misread the info you’ve provided.

I challenge you to get a scrap Jaguar E Type for £2k :)
    It depends on the car.
