School Trip Refused Refund

My son was due to travel to France at the end of May. School advised that the trip would probably be cancelled at the outset of CV19. We then received an email that they were pleased to report that they had managed to postpone the trip until May 2021, with no discussion with parents to enquire if this was acceptable. If we then wanted a refund we had to request so by 20 April and they would try to persue with travel company. Have now received an email on 29 April (went to my junk mail) that the travel body has refused a refund as they have provided another date. The school have asked whether in fact my son could attend in May or whether I wanted them to persue a refund via their insurance company. This surely cannot be right, I thought if travel plans were cancelled due to CV19 that we were legally entitled to a refund.

I would be asking the school for a refund, how they get it to you it's up to them
You paid expecting to go this year and should have been asked if wanted your son to go this year.
Now the trip has been moved you won't be insured for any related COVID-19 issues.
New User name as MSE gave me a number in my old one.

As you will discover, this is more complicated than a normal family holiday. This is happening across the country with school trips. The problem is that parents taking unilateral action removes choice from everyone. The school really need to work with all parents to establish how many want a refund, how many are happy to reschedule and react accordingly. I suspect this will put paid to many school trips for a few years because schools simply won't want the hassle that comes with parents having different demands and expectations when things go wrong.0

There have already been a few posted threads on here regarding cancelled school trips. You may wish to search for these then read these to see what has been reported. Certain further questions were often asked to allow for further remedy suggestions to be made. I would check to see if those were updated and answers given.0
