    Well possibly, extensions get round it. And why would it not, unless very old, which again OP has not mentioned.
    Which do each of your statements apply to format? Power?
    Extensions for coping with GPT on a TV? 
    USB spec is 500mA for USB 2. 900mA for USB 3.
    Wd 5Tb drive takes 800mA running but startup surge is greater and that would probably stop it running. Had similar happen on laptop,

    If it works on your computer then you probably just need to reformat the drive so your TV can understand it. Check your TV's manual for what filesystem it needs. (And whether it understands GPT drives. If not, the drive will need an MBR partition table and will be limited to only using 2 TB.)
    If that still doesn't work, it's probably power. Get a powered USB hub.
