Hi. I’ve just moved in to a rented property that has a prepayment meter. It’s with SSE and is expensive. Once lockdown is over they will change it for a regular meter for free. I suppose my question is can I move companies after only a 4 weeks registered with SSE or should I just stay with them for now and change the meter when allowed?
thanks.
thanks.

You can change companies on the day you move in, but you must register with the existing company first and open an account with them or get your own key card or what ever otherwise you could end up pay for someone else's arrears. Once you've done that you can initiate a change to whoever you like. It usually takes around three week, so you'll have to pay SSE until the switch goes through.
Your new company should be able to sort out a meter change, but you need to make sure that they'll swap your meter to a credit meter before you do.
(it's 10 years since I did it and I ca'nt remember whether I had the meter swapped before I changed supplier or changed first)
TBH I think I'd wait until the meter has been changed and then swap suppliers especially if it's only going to be a month.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

If you do so, expect the request for a meter change to be cancelled.

Be aware that some companies charge for a new meter to be installed so if SSE are doing it for free you might want to stay with them until the meter is changed.
Also, once it’s changed it might take a while for all the industry records to be updated0
