My parked car was hit
Hi all,
Just looking for some advice.
Friday night a truck hit my parked car reversing. It's caused some damage but thankfully nothing is broken, just scratches. I have this captured on my CCTV.
The truck is not MOT'd nor when I checked the MIB database is there any insurance on the vehicle. The truck stayed parked in front of my car for the past couple of days, I left a note on their window asking them to contact me.
On Saturday morning I reported it online to the police.
To my surprise, the owner of the van knocked on my door today to say he found my note, but also to advise me that the van was stolen he showed me the police report and gave me his crime number, name, address telephone number etc.
I think I believe him that the van was stolen, unfortunately, I didn't check when the report was filed, i.e did he see my note then file a report... But I also heard his friend on the phone to who I believe was the police, he was on speaker sitting in the cab, and the "police" saying they wouldn't collect it the truck and they had to arrange collection themselves, as the "officer" on the phone said there was no MOT or insurance for them to drive it. To that end, the 2 guys waited outside my house for about an hour before a recovery truck pulled up and took the truck away.
So the question is what do I do... I could tell my insurance, I could give them the CCTV to prove what happened, but as he was saying it was stolen and there is no insurance attached to that van, I am not sure what the outcome will be.
Obviously given the current climate I have not gone out to get a quote, needless to say, the my car is only about 20 months old so I would take it to a proper Bodyshop to get it fixed which would likely be more money than calling out a SMART repair.
Any views on what I should do? - Call insurance, or suck it up and cover the costs of the repair...
Thanks in advance.
Chris

For me it depends on the cost of putting it right
If its minimal then just get it repaired rather than reporting and paying higher premiums0 -
The van has no insurance - so you can't claim off it.
You've got three choices...
1. Swallow it.
2. Claim from your own insurance.
3. Claim from the MIB for your uninsured losses.
The size of the damage and cost of repairs is going to be your determining factor.
If it had been insured, then whether it was legitimately stolen or not would be irrelevant. The insurer would still be on the hook.0
