Resignation during furlough

Hi guys,
Im currently being furloughed by my current place of work (catering), however I will be starting a new job in the emergency services at the end of June, I never signed a permanent contract so I have no idea what my notice period is.
When should I ask to be taken off furlough? Can I resign a few days before I am supposed to start my new job in order to get paid until I start or would that be wrong?

You can be furloughed by your current employer and work for a different employer at the same time, so long as both employers are happy with that.0
