what happens when annual travel insurance runs out and we need to cover for 2021

We have a 2 week holiday booked for September 2020 that we are looking to try to reschedule for September 2021 but we need to take out new insurance as our current annual travel insurance is due to run out end of January 2021 after our 7 day holiday to Lanzarote.  .  If COVID is going to be something that is around for a number of years and we need travel insurance but that won't be covered what happens if we get ill either before our holiday or while we are away?   I appreciate insurance companies are not going to cover COVID but how do we ensure we have cover?

If you need medical attention abroad and you are not insured for it, you pay the medical costs yourself.  Most people recover from covid with no medical intravention needed.

It's not only the medical costs though.
If someone is overseas and goes down with Covid-19, they will have to isolate themselves for 14 days minimum, something that may come at a great financial cost if they have to pay for accommodation for this. There are also flight cancellations or amendments that may be needed.

I have annual cover with Saga and last year this cost me £126 and it's due for renewal in a couple of weeks. The reneval quote is £141 and the new policy covers everything except Covid.
If I ignore the renewal and take out a new policy (which I intend doing), the premium is back down to about £125.

I guess it all depends on what the government says. If the FCO and the country you're visiting say it's safe to visit, then I assume it'd be like with any other illness - you'll be covered if you get ill. It all depends on how the pandemic unfolds, if we are no longer in a pandemic then travel insurance will act as normal. If you have a holiday booked and you come down with an existing illness - say flu or pneumonia, you're covered.

There is no magic 8 ball, we have no idea when the pandemic will end or when it will be safe to travel again. But insurance wise - once we're out of the pandemic and the official advice is we can travel again, someone who is due to go on holiday comes down with covid-19 you should be covered (in theory).

It WILL be excluded if the insurers amend the policy wording to exclude it.

    Test positive...no cover!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
