erroneous transfer

I first moved into my property in sept 19 and was with Toto energy they put me on a tariff of around £100. I paid my first bill and then found out they went busy. Edf then contacted me to say they would be taking over but had thousands of accounts to work through before they could send a bill out to me. Saving a rough amount every month I rang EDF weekly as I knew this would be racking up a high bill to which they said they still haven’t got to me yet and to hang tight. This process took around 3/4 months. Finally when they got all my information together they informed me that I was switching to Eon. I wasn’t, so after some research I discovered this was called  erroneous Transfer. This has now taken in total 6 months to sort out and they are still trying to figure out a bill for me. I’ve sent them so many meter readings. They are now trying to charge me thousands. Can I ask for some compensation for being messed about for 6 months? I’m now in debt and it’s not my fault.

Have you made formal complaints yet to both EDF and Eon?  If not, you need to do that.
You probably will get some compensation, but don't expect a large amount.  At the end of it, you should be billed for the energy you have actually used, which means you owe the money.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I first moved into my property in sept 19 and was with Toto energy they put me on a tariff of around £100.....
... and this is probably where it started going wrong, the £100 was just an estimate of the amount you needed to pay each month, it was not your 'tariff'.
Have you been sending in meter readings and keeping track of your usage since the start?

  • Yes I’ve been sending up to date meter readings when they ask for them. I’ve been saving up an average of £100 a month because that’s all they could advise me on. I have raised a complaint with them and they have 13 days left to resolve but yesterday I got a bill through for £2500 and that seems quite steep for 7 months energy bills to me. Obviously I’m happy to pay for what I’ve used but it’s just a shame that this couldn’t have been sorted out sooner on their end so I didn’t have to rack up a massive debt that now I’m going to have to pay off each month. I’m going to wait to hear their response to this but just wanted to see if there was anything I could do about it in the mean time. Thank you for your comments

The lessons to be learned are
    • Send meter readings each month whether requested or not, and keep your own records of them
    • If you don't get a bill, do the sums yourself and set  the money aside
It's straightforward with electricity, but with gas you have to convert the volume to kWh.  This site will do it for you.

You have that 1st Bill from Toto, so it's End Meter reading/s will be close to the reading/s when EDF took over - How does that reading/s compare with the Start Reading on EDFs bill?
£100 a month is about average for, say a 3 bed house with 2 adults & 2 kids with Gas Heating, so roughly £800 from Sept 19 till today, but if it's an all Electric house, it will be more than double that.
  • That’s a good point I’ll have a look at the bill from Toto. It’s a three bedroom house all gas with two adults living in it that work full time. Heating over the winter was set to minimum of around 16 as was worried it was going to be expensive. I thought around £800 would be about right. I also forgot to mention that I made two payments to them one of £191 and another of £196 over September and October so I do think I’ve been over charged with a bill of £2500. Thank you for the comments I’m going to check the Toto bill now

There was never any need to estimate or guess, if you have been taking your own readings regularly just work out what you actually owe based on what you have actually used...

What are those readings?  The earliest and now today’s?

Hopefully the OP is now up to speed on challenging EDF's £2,500 bill - When suppliers go broke their books are usually in a total mess and the new supplier makes a 'Best Guess' as to who owes what.

The Erroneous Transfer is an entirely separate matter, but must dealt with quickly as it clouds the EDF's billing demands
The rule is that the customer must be returned to original supplier and suffer no financial hardship, and It needs joint letter headed Complaint to both Eon & EDF, posted to them by Royal Mail.

    PERSONAL MOAN
We are seeing more and more ET's on this site, and I don't expect the new £30 penalty to make any difference as the reason is the suppliers greed at snatching a customer whenever they can with the lest possible effort, and to do this they have thrown overboard the checks they should make - Contact a supplier today and initially the only questions they will ask are your address and annual consumption.
However, when full privatisation came into being, apart from the above the customer would asked for their MPAN number for Elec and MPRN for gas.- These two are unique to the dwellings they supply and are listed on National Data Bases - Any discrepancy in the customers information would be Red Flagged immediately
