Sale item further reduced. Are you only entitled to further reduced price as a refund if return?

The further reduction was carried out in space of 1 week. Any clarification would be appreciated as been told I can only be refunded half of what I originally paid the week before.

Lots more information is needed before any sort of answer can be given.

Did you buy in a store or was it an online purchase?
If online, was it from a UK or EU based seller or were they elsewhere?
What is the reason for wanting to return the item?
If you bought it in a store in the UK, do you have a receipt if you are returning it for a change of mind or if it's faulty, do you have any proof of purchase?

Was bought in store at UK supermarket, was returned with receipt as simply didn't fit well (clothing item).
Obviously with current COVID19 situation I am only shopping once a week, whereas usually would've returned next day

There's no statutory right to a refund for something you bought in store just because it doesn't fit, so it's up to the store's own policy.

But a lot of places - M&S, Next, TKMaxx for example - do offer returns for change of mind which is over and above statutory rights.
I thought Tesco & Sainsburys had the same policy.
And assuming the (unnamed) UK supermarket the OP bought from had the same policy...I would have expected to get a refund of the amount I paid on production of the receipt.
I've done that before at M&S & Next i.e. bought an item at a higher price than the same item was priced at when I returned it.
Unless there were notices in the store saying that sale items would only be refunded at the price on the date of return, not the price paid.

Is it because it’s a sale item and their policy on returns for change of mind differs to their standard t and c.

name of supermarket would be good

While not a legal requirement,  unsuitable returns are generally allowed by retailers and (as long as receipt is provided) the original purchase price refunded.

Only if no receipt is available will the current cost of the item be refunded.

However, it's solely down to each  retailer's own individual returns policy. Sounds like this was a sale item now  heavily discounted and which they  want to clear.
