We did this for several years when living and working in France. We used Hoseasons plus local advertising and didn't make a fortune but didn't make a loss. We and family would use the place when we needed to and let it at other times, started with a flat in Worthing and then a house in Lincolnshire.
Make sure before buying that there is a demand in that area and check lease if leasehold. You need to go to a mortgage broker to find out what is available for you.
Some of our best lets were long term, someone building a new house nearby, temporary job person and a team of archaeologists doing a survey.
Do not think there are any pitfalls if you go for it, we would do it again in the same circumstances.1 -

We already own the house, it's freehold but mortgaged, so we are more than happy to break even by just covering the mortgage, whilst retaining the ability to use the house occasionally.
You're right - I need to find a good mortgage advisor... so far the C-19 situation seems to have taken many of them offline.

We have a gite in the Loire Valley - we do rent this out - but the season is 10-12 weeks here - so we get between 8 & 12 weeks. Just think of what is happening now - we have to close the gite, so this year have had no-one in! So no money.

We have a small house we let for holidays through an agency. We started in mid April 2021 when the Govt said we could and were booked pretty much all through until beginning of Dec. No bookings Dec or Jan but Feb and March have been full and lots of bookings spread out across the year. We have got excellent reviews from everyone and several repeat bookings. We are in the process of doing our sums as we are approaching the full year so we need to see how much profit we’ve made or whether we go back to permanent tenants.0

It may not be closed, but the OP hasn't visited the forum in nearly a year....

Posts here don't get closed (except rarely for breaches of forum rules etc), they just die a slow death until someone inadvertantly or deliberately resurrects them causing confusion to others who don't check dates and start replying to a long-gone OP!Pennylane said:
