Growing Potatoes in Pots, Advice Please

I've planted some Charlotte seed potatoes in a large plastic trug, and they seem to have started well. One or two were barely showing above the compost, but the rest had a flourishing little green growth going on, a few inches high. Today I poured more compost in the trug so now I can't see any more growth (I carefully marked their positions first, so I know where to look). I'm now stressing that I shouldn't have covered them completely. Will they grow through (ie take no action) or should I scoop out some of the compost tomorrow until I can see the green foliage again. I've never attempted tatties before, so I'm a bit lost tbh. Oh, they're outside, not in a greenhouse/polytunnel etc, if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance.

They'll grow through, assuming you did not cover them in 6 feet of soil of course

Yes, they'll grow through and the compost over the new leaves will protect them from the low night temperatures.

"As the plants grow gently cover the shoots with more compost until the level is just below the top of the bag or planter."

Thanks both. I just about covered the plants, so they should cope with that. About half the depth of the trug to go...

Every time they show through top up with compost until your container is full.
    Keep well watered.
