UK cottage, refusing to refund

Hi everyone - hoping someone can help. We had booked to stay a week in Devon at the end of March, obviously cancelled due to covid.
The company offered us a credit note to re-book. I asked immediately for a refund, to be told we couldn’t have one.
It’s difficult for us to rebook, due to work commitments and child sports etc the only weeks available are double the cost of the week we booked - we can’t book for the same week next year (the cheapest time to go) as our dog will be having puppies (I’m a dog breeder so plan things in advance)
the company are point blank refusing to refund. They have offered a 50% refund, claiming the remaining 50% will be kept by them to cover the costs incurred by our booking, I can’t see what costs have been incurred by our booking that was cancelled 2 weeks before our arrival date!

I’ve emailed them with the CMA findings, but they still refuse to refund me. Can anyone help? Are they in the right to refuse to refund? They claim they have been accommodating by offering us to re-book, but as stated that’s not easy!

Did you book direct, what method of payment did you use?

Thanks for your reply, yes we booked direct by debit card0

Contact you card company and tell them you want a Chargeback on that transaction, saying you are due a refund as they broke the contract and they are refusing to refund you .

I didn’t realise we could do that on a debit card, but if we can that’s great!Life__Goes__On said:Contact you card company and tell them you want a Chargeback on that transaction, saying you are due a refund as they broke the contract and they are refusing to refund you .0 -
On a debit card it's Chargeback but it's up to the debit card company to decide
On a credit card you can do Chargeback and if that fails raises it to a section 75, sadly no section 75 on a debit card.
