Eon overcharged us by £400
Options
Hello,
We have been with eon for a year and I was recently reviewing our bills and noticed that our energy was £430 in December for 3 months of energy. Our usage has been £35 per month prior to this and after. See excerpt from bill below:

We had a smart meter installed on the 30th October which then put our meter to zero. I believe that the reading of 11916 is incorrect as we can't have used 10 times the amount of energy between September and October as we did between October and December. Unfortunately we didn't take a reading ourselves between September and October and the installer did not leave a reading with us.
I have contacted eon via email and they have said this reading is correct and that I need to increase my direct debit to pay off the debt.
Can anyone help me prove that this reading must be incorrect? I don't want to call them as it says 'emergency only' but I also don't want to have to pay £400 unnecessarily so feeling a bit stuck!
Many thanks for any help

This a repost from the LPG, etc board of a couple of days agoNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Have a look on or next to your meter to see if there's a card/sticker that confirms the final reading from your old meter.
The serial number would suggest it was a digital meter so I don't understand how it could have been misread.0 -
Have you the previous bill ? Is the reading of 26th Sept 09446Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

On this latest bill the meter reading of 09446 on 26 Sept is marked A i.e actual. As you did not supply that reading, it presumably must have been a meter reader?Your consumption on the smart meter for 8 weeks(30 Oct to 25 Dec) was only 283kWh it supports your contention that 2,470kWh for 5 weeks is implausible. As your usage can be shown on previous bills to be around £35 monthly(around 200kWh?) it further supports your case.If you can get no satisfaction on the phone, I think you have no option but to raise a formal complaint in writing.0

Update: I had the overcharge written off! I had no luck over phone or email but I sent them a message on twitter and managed to get it sorted fairly quickly after that. They agreed that the final meter reading must have been incorrect and wildly too high.0

Let's shout it from the roof tops. Post on Twitter if you get a daft energy bill.
Well done OP.0
