Hi could any one help, at the moment i am on a payg meter but i would like to have a standard meter installed as i could move suppliers and save 775 per year. My question is if i request the meter change for both gas and electric (British Gas) would they make me take out a new lengthy tariff which would obviously stop me moving suppliers for a long while.

You are always free to move suppliers (providing you don't owe them a considerable amount of money). The only caveat would be the application of early exit fees. if any. This is designed to discourage (but not prevent) you moving away until the term is up.You can move suppliers on PAYG tariffs too, but these are not always the cheapest going. You may find once the meter is switched out you get by default dumped on some expensive tariff that costs a fortune, but you can move at that point.1

If you have any reason to be concerned about a credit check, then it would be worth switching your existing prepay supply over to EDF first, as they convert accounts without credit checking - British Gas are known to be particularly stringent on checking into prospective prepay-to-credit switchers.
Also, be aware that you won't be able to get the swap done for many months. Even once the lockdown is lifted the backlog of works is likely to take a long time to get through.
