Updating stairs on a 1930s semi d

Hi,
We purchased a pretty standard 1930 (actual build date 1927) semi detached house last year and I want to redo the stairs. They're very narrow and shallow and carpeted.
Ideally I want to rip up the carpet and paint it and get a carpet runner down the stairs.
I was just wondering if anyone has done anything similar and can tell me what to expect when the carpets removed, slightly worried about what I might find.
Thank you!!

There's only one way to find out!Ours were fine until we moved in with a teenage boy who sounds like he's falling down them every time he comes down. We had to replace four treads recently.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I hate carpets and in my house the stairs aren't carpeted. However, I want to carpet them because they are noisy and slippery. Dangerous if you like walking in socks.
