Single parent - employer wants me back at my desk

Personally I think you'd catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
But if your employer wants you back in the office then I think you'd either have to take unpaid leave or use holidays.
How age child(ren) are we talking about?

I thought that all schools and nurseries, after school clubs etc are not allowed to accept the children of workers who are not key workers.
Depending on the child/ children's ages then OP is between a rock and hard place. The employer wants them back at work but it is against the law to leave the children unattended."All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well."

Even that is a grey area - unless I am out of date?whizzywoo said:I thought that all schools and nurseries, after school clubs etc are not allowed to accept the children of workers who are not key workers.

It is against the law to neglect a child or put them in harm's way but there is not actually a laid down age at which they can or cannot be left unattended.1 -
Correct. There is no legal age.
Generally 10/11/12 seen as potentially acceptable depending on the child and the circs.1 -
I would in the first instance speak to your child’s school, the official line is that it should only be for the children of key workers currently and those that are deemed vulnerable . However if you not working and being on unpaid leave is going to put you in the vulnerable category there might (and I’m not making any promises here.....) be a little bit of wiggle room to argue your case.
Your employer can of course at anytime ask you to return to work, there isn’t anything wrong in that0
