Hi. I'm really hoping some wonderful person can help us here.
My son gave notice on his shared house in London in March. He came to Wales to visit me 1 week before lockdown and therefore is stuck here in Wales with me. He should have moved out at the end of April but as Government guidance has said, he is now unable to move his belongings out. He has emailed his landlord telling him he cant get to London to remove his belongings but the landlord has told him he has to pay or move his belongings out. Should we drive to London and move him out going against guidance? Can we rightly not pay even though his belongings are still there? Thanks

His belongings are still there so he still lives there.
He was entitled to drive home under the lockdown rules and also move house under the lockdown rules.

Suggest he drives there and gets his belongings asap.1

Moving is allowed, so why would this be an issue?0

Of course he still owes rent. He left his stuff there and intends for return for it. How would the lndlord let the room in the meantime.
Go and get his stuff0 -
There seem to be a lot of misunderstandings here. You can move in England. Plus I know people who regularly live in Wales but work in England.
How is moving back from London to Wales forbidden?
I wouldn't underestimate the risks; bring gloves, masks, cleaning equipment and stay 2m apart from everybody not in your household.
Phone the flatmates ahead and ask them to avoid you during the move.
Take photos of the place after you've left it in a good condition, which you'll obviously want to do.
Leave sufficient contact details and keep good relations with all you need to.

I assume the notice was properly served, and he had a sole tenancy -not joint with the housemates, sice the LL seems to have accepted the notice.Others have said that if he fails to vacate he still owes rent.In fact the Distress For Rent Act allows the landlord to charge double rent if a tenant fails to vacate after serving notice. This is to compensate for the inconvenience and potential financial loss caused by the tenant's actions.Get in the car and move out!3
