I suspect it's more to do with good old Nicola & Co wanting to sound like their devolved government is going to do things differently to Westminster thereby justifying their continued existence.

Whilst in reality it is really is more sound bite than major support scheme.

That said there may be a few hard hit individuals who fail other support who will be grateful for this scheme.

What I dont get is that its called "Hardship" grant.  If you dont qualify for UC its because your not in hardship as total household income is taken into account, but your not claiming UC so you qualify for a "Hardship" grant?? Wierd.
  • Im already claiming UC, already had my firat payment.
Im going to cancel it today and say ive got some self employed work.  Then apply for the grant next week.
Il let you all know how I get on lol.
To apply for the grant you have to receive the letter

i haven’t received the letter yet

All the businesses that have zero income and still the same outgoings are surely classed as in hardship right now

I think you are referring to SEISS. This post is about the Scottish hardship grant for newly self employed people.

I dont think the Newly Self Employed Hardship Grant is to cover business expenses.  Im sure its for personal/living expenses.  There is another scheme/grant for businesses.

I pretty confused here too - been waiting for the grant details to be announced and I don't see how very many are going to be eligible. If you qualify for benefits, (less than 16k saved) and in receipt then you can't get it. But to qualify your have to have insufficent savings to meet basic needs. This would of course qualify you for benefits, by a very long way. I expect people in this scenario have claimed long ago too. I'm newly self employed in scotland, work has dried up competely and I don't get a penny in support/benefits as have savings, and now I don't qualify for this fund either. I don't see who this is going to help? Non-eu nationals maybe, do they not qualify for any other benefits? Very confused, it makes no sense.

Maybe about only 10 people in Scotland will be eligible  :D
When I heard about this a few weeks ago it got my hopes up, feel a bit deflated now though.
Im still waiting on a reply from the Scottish Government.
