Not sure why you are surprised by that. It was 40 years ago. Data protection compliance recommends destruction of data after 6 years.

Clearly, the "complaint" must have been made before the deadline to have even been considered or looked into by the lender. If the enquiry was after the deadline, the OP would have simply been time barred.societys_child said:

When did the account close? If more than six years ago you need to ask Santander or send a SAR. My partner had a Burtons card that closed in 1998 but Santander still had records about it.
