Not sure why you are surprised by that.  It was 40 years ago.  Data protection compliance recommends destruction of data after 6 years.

What are you hoping to achieve? If it's regarding PPI, the complaint deadline was many months ago.

Clearly, the "complaint" must have been made before the deadline to have even been considered or looked into by the lender. If the enquiry  was after the deadline, the OP would have simply been time barred.    

Even at the height of  PPI complaints, 40 year old finance had zero chance of being successfully complained about-not least because PPI was still very rare at that time. 

Regardless of the reason for wanting  to "trace" this account, there really is no point in the OP pursuing  this any further...

When did the account close?  If more than six years ago you need to ask Santander or send a SAR. My partner had a Burtons card that closed in 1998 but Santander still had records about it.  So it’s not a lost cause yet.
