Anti Virus & E mail

My weekly virus check scanned today and brought up 3 threats, I have norton firewall running but my virus is out of date, checked on here and downloaded a free program (begins with an A, sorry can't remember) but then my e mail wouldn't work, kept coming up with an error message. What have a not done or done wrong?
Sorry to sound dumb but I havn't a clue, hope someone can help?

P.s have now uninstalled it and the e mail is now working!

You can only have one AV running at a time, having two running will cause errors.

But you have have more than one anti spyware program running.

so sholuld i uninstall the norton one, and re install the other?
can you clarify the last line of your response please

Yeah, I would. IMO the free programs are much better.

I would go with the programs I listed in this thread on post number 5, but also get AVG anti virus. Also for your Firewall I would go with Zonealarm free edition.

If your norton install is out of subscription now then it is no longer any good to you as an anti-virus. Remove it or re-subscribe to it before you find a lot more problems on the pc.

Thanks guys, I have uninstalled the norton and installed the AVG free Edition and everything is ok so far, all threats have been removed and e mail restored.
