Combi or System Boiler?

  • There is a large cupboard on the outside wall in the kitchen which is where we were hoping to put the boiler, just wanted to max our space on the landing.
If you do choose to have a combi, it would be best sited as close as possible to the bathroom if you can.  As above, you may get fed up with waiting for hot water to come through otherwise.

But you have to flush the cold water standing in the pipework out, regardless of the boiler type. A modern combi should reach working temp in just a few seconds, so the water cost is tiny.
Sounds like an install issue on that particular boiler.

Well I have a new high output Veissman combi in an annex and the nearest hot tap is no more than 8 feet from the boiler and it still takes about 20 seconds for the water to get up to full temperature if tap is turned on fully; that is quicker than the previous boiler.
Some of the more expensive combis have a pre-heat facility that can be switched on or off. This is a small internal tank(mine is 46 litres I believe) to overcome the inherent delay in delivering hot water. In fact the brochure states:
'Wall mounted gas fired condensing boiler with integral cylinder for the highest DHW convenience'
I leave this tank heater switched off

If you're doing it anyway, why not get a thermal store system? I've had one in a new build since 2007, and it's bloody fantastic. 3-storey, 3 bathroom house and gas hob cooking, total gas bill for a year is circa £300 for all hot water, heating and the hob. Condenser boiler and a boilermate, so hot water is at mains pressure and no delay, no hot water tank (but the boilermate takes up similar space, and the boilermate controls when the boiler fires. Very good and efficient system.
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

We recently had  our 36 yr old system boiler replaced with a new system boiler but was surprised to find that had we gone for a combi (didn’t want one, existing house set up works for us) we would have needed the supply pipe upgrading from 15mm to 22mm which would have added some cost and major disruption in the house (bungalow, solid floors).

If you have a system one and the boiler breaks down, you can still get hot water using the immersion heater.  If a combi breaks down you'll have no hot water until it is fixed.

I think we're heading towards the system boiler - everything I've researched and read doesn't sound great for a combi
    Thanks everyone :)
