Wedding cancellation non refundable deposit

Options
Hello,  I am just looking for maybe others experience with wedding cancelled due to covid19. Our wedding on 10th May cancelled (postponed) by the venue, we would rather get a refund of our deposit and book again when our situation dictates we can. The famous wedding venue is saying this is not possible and they will keep the deposit and we can book next year.  Where do we stand with this please?

The exact details may depend on the contract you signed, but in general if they have cancelled the booking you should be eligible for a full refund.

Don't use the word 'postponed' in any dealings with them, and if they use it point out the booking has not been postponed, it has been cancelled. It is not their decision if or when you set another date. You had a booking with them for a specific date, which they are unable to fulfill, therefore it is cancelled.

But also bear in mind that hopefully once this dreadful virus is a thing of the past wedding venues are going to be snapped up like crazy so it might be worth thinking about this.
