Tough Mudder - refusing refund for cancelled event

Hello, a team of us had registered for Tough Mudder this May, but due to Covid-19 this has now been cancelled. We have tried to get a refund only to be told that as we bought our tickets last year when the company was under previous ownership we are not entitled to a refund, they will only swap our event or donate the money to charity. Can they do this?
Many thanks

Not if it's the same company. Do they mean you contracted with a different company from the one now trading as Tough Mudder?

Interestingly enough Tough Mudder is apparently OCR UK HOLDINGS LTD which was only incorporated in January this year, so depending on how you paid then it might be worth trying a S75 on your credit card card or the equivalent on your debit card0

Why don't you take the swap? Seems fair enough really if it is now a new company

Tough Mudder did indeed go under and the name was bought with another company, so they're right.
You could use Section 75 if it's paid with a credit card, but aside from that you're rather stuffed0
