Garden shed re roofing

Options
Hi, I have an old(15 yr plus) wooden garden shed. Its felt roof it came with has split exposing the wood underneath. Its needs re-roofing and the cheapest quote of 5 has been £210....So it looks like I may be taking my first foray into refelting the roof. Its quite small(each panel is 180 x 80cm).
I've bought felt, clout nails etc.
Can someone help with a query please? Some online tutorials differ in their felt roofing method. Obviously it needs one strip on each panel with overhang to tuck and nail, which leaves 10-15cm going over the top point where both panels meet in the middle(the apex?) So both panels will have 10-15cms on the opposite side. Would I be prudent to put another panel along the middle join and if so as it is? which is 1meter or cut it to say 30-50cms width?
I hope this makes sense and I thank you for any help and input.
ps-first time doing this so don't laugh too hard at the non technical terms....I thank you:)

  • I don't quite understand. All you need is  3 strips. As long as the strip that straddles the apex and overhangs each panel  covers each panel by at least 15cm it should be fine..The more the better.
  • Thanks for the info Justagardener. First time re roofing, its all very different to my day job;) so I needed to check. Cheers.

On a small playhouse in the garden I just have two strips, the first one overlapping the apex by around 20cm, the other one same on the other side, so there is an overlap of 40cm, 20cm either side.
On another building I have cut a smaller strip and used that over the apex, so it is symmetrical.
To summarise you don't need it but it might look better with it.
Are you burning it onto the roof?
If the £210 quote is to also provide felt and burn it on, it maybe wasn't too bad.
There is a vast difference in the quality of felt so check you have decent stuff.

Good on you for doing it. Try and spend a bit more on the felt if you can.. there are some very cheap ones online they will be fine for a while but are quite thin and tear easily.

I did mine a couple of times in my younger days. I'd still do a smaller one if needed it's easy enough.
I found a local hardware shop would do half rolls which was more than enough so saved quite a bit.
There are 'felt tacks' that are also available. They are zinc type, stubby & thicker with bigger heads so as not to tear the felt in high wind. They are easily available.
Remember to overlap the bottom edges of the roof to stop rain getting at it and a strip along the length of the apex to add strength.
What is tricky is getting the sheet of felt onto the roof if you are up a ladder. You need someone to take the weight and help spread it, hold one end in place while you tack the first bit but it's fairly quick so not a big ask.
The last time I paid an odd job guy to do it and that was under £50. He did put the end boards back the wrong way but came back to put it right no problem........how you can get them the wrong way goodness knows ! It gave me a chuckle though
