Taking a cutting from a much loved Magnolia Tree
Options
Hello I wonder is somebody could very kindly help me.
Im a bit (very) clueless about gardening but have a very loved Magnolia tree that has followed us around different houses. Now its too big to move.
How could I take a cutting from it to grow one to two on so when we move in a few years time I can take part of it with me.
It has very strong sentimental value as it reminds me of my Mother who bought it for us
Many thanks

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Taking cuttings from magnolia and getting them to grow isn't easy. Ideally, you'd have a cold frame situated in a semi-shaded position and full of good, gritty soil into which you'd put the cuttings....with a chance then they'd then survive their first winter. Even in ideal conditions, growing magnolias from cuttings isn't always successful, and with some varieties it's very unlikely to work. The best advice I have is to try layering.RHS guide here:
