Guernsey Probate not excepted by Lloyd’s Bank

Options
My mother died and as she lived in Alderney, Channel Islands and her bank accounts were in Lloyd’s and HSBC on the Island I had to get Guernsey probate. This went reasonably easily and I was Granted Probate 7th Feb 2020. As my mother had an account in Lloyd’s Bank I opened an executors account in my local branch of Lloyds UK in Jan 2020 taking the additional information ie the Guernsey Probate, death certificate and copy wills into the branch about 20th Feb. The bereavement centre for Lloyd’s Bank received all the relevant paperwork to release the funds into the executors account at Lloyd’s The branch did not inform us that this had happened and after checking 3 wks later we were told that we needed uk probate and they would not release the funds until then. Consequently I did not apply for probate until 13th March 2020 sending forms to Oxford who in turn forwarded them onto Cardiff who have taken 4 weeks to tell us they need a certified copy of the Guernsey Probate which can’t be done at the moment. Has anybody else had the problem with Channel Island probate not being accepted by Uk banks. Lloyd’s international were very surprised we were having so much trouble and the local branch.

  • It is not accepted as for monetary purposes it is 'overseas'.
It works both ways though - if you had uk bank accounts then UK probate is not acceptable in Channel islands.
I wonder why Lloyds International did not suggest you open the Executor account in Guernsey?
Can we ask how much money was held in the UK Lloyds account?
If under £50k then probate would not have been required to close the account.
  • We were told by Lloyd’s international in Alderney that we could not open an account as we did not live in the Channel Islands. And the amount is over £200,000 Thank you for you reply
  • She did not have any accounts in the Uk. Except now the money from Lloyd’s international has now been paid into the exec a/c in UK

Have Cardiff advised who they will accept certifying the copy. Some solicitors are working from home so a local one may be prepared to help for a fee?
Would LLOYDS  Bank certify a copy if Cardiff would accept that?
  • We managed to get a copy done and sent it recorded to Cardiff but my biggest gripe is with Lloyd’s for not telling us when we opened the account.
Still can’t go back just have wait for uk probate if that the rules it just means we’ve paid twice.
