Hi all, just purchased a redeveloped/converted property. The brown gas box outside is in a terrible state and needs replacing. Is that something you can do yourself, or do you have to be certified in some way? Also, the box was fitted before all the rendering was finished, as such, i need it removing for 24hrs so i can have some brickwork repaired behind it. My gas supplier is Eon, would it be them to do it? Any help is very much appreciated. Keep safe.

You are responsible for the box. You can pay to get old one removed and new fitted or DIY.  Just use google.

Plenty places sell them, even here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MK2-Tricel-Surface-Mounted-GAS-Meter-Box-MeterBox-MK2-White-National-Grid/323422485646?hash=item4b4d7b7c8e:g:KikAAOSwP7NbiO2l

Hasbeen, please dont tell someone to DIY it.

Red, Is your box in the ground, or on the wall?
Your best bet is to contact a local gas transporter to carry out the box replacement and discuss the supply being disconnected for 24 hours to finish off the rendering.

Apologise. Did not mean op to disconnect any gas supply etc.

My son had to get new box his was smashed. The fitter that replaced just cut away the old box and screwed on new over pipes meter. Did not disconnect. Perhaps different type of box.

You are perfectly correct Op needs a qualified person to do any gas work.

You were right in that you said it’s the OP’s responsibility. Which it is, perhaps not DIY though haha.
A gas transporter will charge a decent amount of money for that. And it won’t be done quickly.
All depends on the type of box too!
Are you planning on covering the service too?
This is a no no, You may end up in the realms of a built over service. Which, when found will result in you being charged to sort out.

Thank you for the info. DIY i won't do. The box is fitted to the wall. I have called BG and they told me to talk to the regional distributor which i did. They referred me back to BG. Going round in circles sadly. My energy supplier is Npower, i'll try them to see if they will help, but i'm guessing they don't manage the hardware so to speak. Thanks again.

If you're willing to pay, I would expect it to be your regional gas distributor who would do the work.  They are the people who do meter moves.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

As mentioned, if you want a network to carry out this work they will charge accordingly.
They’re only responsible up to the ECV....everything else (the Reg, the meter, the box) isn’t theirs and are in no way responsible for it.
Are you able to post a picture?
If you get a gas fitter to disconnect the meter the service should move out of the way to remove the box. Assuming it’s PE which I think it will be.

They won’t fit a box into brickwork. Semi sub yes. Not a built in box. They will move the gas out of the way while you have someone do it though.
