Barclays Bank

Can Martin have a word with the Banks as there must be thousands out there with the same problem. My wife tried to pay money into my account as I am 4 and a half week into my 12 week isolation. They wouldn't accept it due to possible money laundering. I know this was a rule brought in a couple of years ago but how many people need someone else to go to the bank and deposit money on their behalf? Surely this can be relaxed at this terrible time?

  • That's what Barclays told her. Unfortunately, Barclays is the only bank still open in my town and she would have to do a 4 mile bus ride to deposit the cash in her account as she doesn't drive. There are also 3 cheques in my name and she doesn't do online banking. Other than that your simple solution would be great. :-)  I went down myself (at considerable risk due to health issues) paid it in and they have arranged to send me a paying in book for future payments. ;-)

Best solution and going forward is for both you and your wife to get up to date with online banking.
This was the best thing I have ever done - as long as you are careful, you move your money around and it's in our bank account in a day or two.

Have you got a Post Office within easy reach? They offer counter services for all major banks.

If your cheques are for less than £500, there are now several banks who offer mobile cheque deposit - i.e. you don't even have to leave your house to deposit a cheque.

As an aside, why do you have a need for depositing lots of cash and cheques at present? Are the people who are paying you not able to pay you by bank transfer or debit / credit card?

Banks aren't going to suddenly drop all money laundering checks just because someone makes the choice to use a lot of cash and use several cheques (which you can also pay in using the Barclays app).

Martin has nothing to do with the forums. In fact he is nothing but a figurehead for MSE given he sold out years ago.

If anything at this time staff are more vigilant. These bad people know when things are bad, that is when they strike as hope that the workloads allow them to escape unnoticed.

She can deposit cash at the Post Office using your debit card.
Either can deposit cheques via the app or at the Post Office.

Money laundering hasn't diminished due to the virus outbreak.
How much was your wife attempting to bank? Why couldn't she pay the money into her own account?

So all Barclays staff had to do was establish the identity of the OP's wife, ask where the monies came from and then allow the OP's wife to deposit the monies into his account. "Money laundering" is merely a spurious excuse British banks use for their poor customer service.

A lot of banks now don’t allow you to go into a branch and make a payment into A.N.Other account that isn’t yours.
It’s been that way for as long as I can remember - like the days of yore when you used to “forget” or “lose” your bank card and you could withdraw money over the counter with some other form/s of ID.
