Furlough confusion

Hi,
I have just heard from my employer I'm one of the unlucky few not eligible for furlough. I am slightly confused by this, I worked for this employer from October 2019 to January 2020; I am a student and was struggling to balance work with study so I left my job at the end of January. I was asked multiple times to come back part time so that is what I did at the start of march. We get paid our wages the first Friday of the following month (so april). I understand this makes me out of time for the feb-march cut offs, however the confusing part for me is the advice to ask old employers to rehire you if you worked there before February cut off (which I did in jan). I would also like to know if I am eligible to apply for universal credit if I cant be furloughed as I am a student? Would student status effect this?
Any advice is appreciated!
Thank you!
