Do monetary gifts have to be physically transferred before death to count as a gift/surplus income?

    Thanks Sue. Yes the total value of the estate is much more than the nil rate band and direct descendent allowance regardless so that is not relevant. 

    Can you please clarify how a deed of variation might help?

    It wouldn't impact on the amount of IHT payable now (unless the DOV is to leave a slug of the estate to charity, in which case it could).
