However if you amend your order the early evening prior to delivery day, it gives you chance to select alternatives rather than just not receiving items.

Agreed. If you must do it, for God's sake don't leave it to the last minute.

I'f I'd done that, approximately half of my order would have been deleted. By not logging in to amend, I got everything I wanted.

It does seem a bit odd that you can only order stuff that's in stock at the time you place the order. For example, I can't add skimmed milk onto my order at the moment, because it's currently out of stock, but I'm sure they will have restocked their milk by the time the order collection date comes.
I have a bad feeling that what we see on screen has very little to do with what's on the shelves.

Seven items on my order were out of stock the night before delivery. i decided to leave it to the mercy of substitutions rather than just have them thrown out of the order as I could only find more expensive brand name substitutes. Four of the original items came and the other substitutions were acceptable except one which I had a refund for. I usually wait until most of my items are in stock before amending my order then just leave it alone.

I tried adding possible subs to my trolley. just in case. However, this proved to be a bad idea. If an item is shown as unavailable, then you switching to your alternative means that you pay it's (usually higher) price. Leaving it for them to do the substitution means that you only pay the price of the item you ordered.

I've just tried it and it worked, although it wasn't quite as fast as usual. A lot of firms' servers must be ... how can I put this kindly? ... running a bit warmer than usual at the moment.

At the moment I am able to book Asda delivery slots roughly 2 weeks in advance. I inevitably need to make changes to the order nearer the delivery date, as the need for new items arises in the meantime (or as I need to cancel items that I no longer need). My problem is that, when I amend my order a day or so before the delivery date, I am regularly finding that important items (e.g. semi skimmed milk) are being flagged as unavailable when I check out, and are being automatically removed from my basket. If I cancel the order amendments, and go with the order as originally placed 2 weeks earlier, the "unavailable" items invariably arrive as requested - indicating that they were not really "unavailable" at all.
    Does anyone know:
    - why items are regularly flagged as unavailable when I checkout, when they are clearly available?
    - how I can amend an order a couple of days before delivery without losing the items which are incorrectly being flagged as unavailable? i.e. how to prevent these items from being automatically removed from my basket?

I think it's a flaw in the system. I have the same with Tesco. I'll amend my order. It will say these items are being removed as unavailable yet when I log in on the day of delivery they are back in stock!
