Make sure that when he says he's paying for the credit cards that he's waiting for the statements before doing so, and not paying it off as he spends on the card every day. The balance on his credit file should show something like - Jan Balance £500 Payment £500 - Feb Balance £440 - Payment £440 - Mar - Balance £847 - Payment £847. He has to show evidence of good behaviour and managing credit. Are there things he could be paying for on card that he could then settle the balance in full and not pay any interest? The more he can use them, and pay off in full every month, the more it will benefit him by the time the mortgage application comes around - and with regular usage and paying off - he might find his credit limits also get raised which is a positive factor when you only have a small amount of credit available to you - it infers more trust.
