BA Flight Cancellation Expenses Claim [COVID-19]

I wonder if anyone has a view on this problem as i am struggling to get anywhere.
My wife and I were due to return home from Tenerife on a BA Flight on the 14th of March. During the morning before we left the hotel i received an email saying the flight ahd been cancelled no explanation and no offer of an alternative flight. The reason for the cancellation was that Spanish ATC had closed Spanish airspace. I immeadiatley tried to contact BA using the link and the email but to no avail. Whilst trying to contact them i looked for other avialable flights that day or the Sunday as you can imagine as this was a ATC issue and a number of flights had been cancelled seats were dissappearing rapidly i managed eventually to book two seats on a Norwegian flight for £900 the next day! I arrange with the hotel to stay another night and we had a meal there, i considered my self lucky that we were not at the airport trying to do all of this.
We arrived safely home and I contacted my insurance company (another issue ) and they adivsed me to claim for my additional expenses and extra ticket costs from BA if i had no luck then i should go back to them. As a bit of background we did not travel out with BA and we booked everything ourselves seperately.
I contacted BA who offered approximately 75% of the hotel and meal costs but told me that they had no obligation to pay my additional flight expenses. I have read Regulation EC261 and it is my understanding that even if a flight is cancelled and it is out of the control ofthe airline it is still an obligation of the airline to either reroute me ASAP or at a time we both agree in the future, in this case BA only cancelled the flight and therefore have not discharged their duty.
I just want to hear what others think as most claims around EC261 are about compensation and i totally understand that compensation is not due as the cancellation was outside the control of BA. However they have not fulfilled their onligations to assist in my return home.
Any thoughts gratefully accepted
Thanks
