If you have a friendly neighbour they might give you the password for their router. They can configure their network so that you can use their router/ Wi-Fi without being able to access their devices. Most decent routers cover an area much larger than the property they sit in.

Thanks guys. Its not so much getting the internet working that im querying, ive left that in the hands of my supplier so out my control. Was looking for advice on if my company were allowed to be doing that. Given the fact, ive been told to work from home, theyve supplied other people who didnt have internet at home a dongle but ive been told i “dont qualify” for one because i did originally have internet, and even then the dongles arent working very well for those who have them.
If i use all my holidays now, im left with nothing until next year to take a break after all this is over with. I just dont think the company should be able to force me into using holidays, or go 2 weeks on zero pay. Thanks
Having a working internet connection within a day or two is not out of your control.

There is a solution available, you are just choosing not pursue it.

Set up some internet or lose some money the choice is yours!

Do you have a reasonable data plan that you could use your mobile data as a temporary measure?

It's not unreasonable of what your employer is asking, it's no different than if you had childcare issues and you had to be at home to look after them that you would have to take the leave of absence with holiday or unpaid leave.

It's completely different. Childcare is a personal need/requirement for you to be available to work. This internet connection is a business need/requirement for the OP to perform their duties.

    ^ this.
It's not out of your control.  I can understand you wanting to know your rights - and technically, in normal times, you could probably argue it was up to your employer to sort it out.  But these are not normal times, and there is a solution available to you to sort it out yourself and keep getting paid.

So i call Sky as broadband wasnt working in the morning. Theyve told me theres a disconnection in the network which requires an openreach engineer to fix. I have 8GB data on my mobile so not enough to tether, and work are telling me they have gave people dongles however they are not working on our systems. Your post is no help whatsoever. Please....go ahead and tell me how this NOT out of my control and what your solution is for me to pursue it?

8GB of data can go a fair way if you're careful with it - are you likely to be using it for large downloads? If you would need to be using it quite intensely, get it touch with your provider - they should be able to offer a temporary increase in your data cap without too much of a premium. You might even find that your employer would be willing to reimburse you for the difference.

You'll need to put some effort in and do the legwork if you want to keep working, no one on here can spoon feed you the complete answer.

You need an internet connection at home, your landline isn't available to provide it so there are numerous alternative ways of providing internet to yourself.
We don't know where you live or exactly which services work in your area but the vast majority of UK households have several options, some of which can be available to you in a day or two.

    Explore the options mentioned already.

Simplest and quickest and easiest, can any neighbours share their broadband with you?

Next explore the mobile and wireless options for your location.

Mobile is likely to be the quickest to set up. Unlimited data home broadband via the mobile network is available from around £20 a month. Most would consider that a reasonable amount to invest in a backup service if your working from home for a while. You'd need to research which network would work best in your location.
Look at companies like EE, vodaphone, O2 and 3

Another alternative would be a wireless connection from specialist broadband suppliers, more often available in areas with poor landlines and poor mobile coverage. Might need an engineer install which could take a week or so although I've heard of some being sorted within a couple of days.

You also need to establish why the work computers aren't connecting to your workplace. Did yours work normally before you lost the landline connection? Did you use a wireless connection or an Ethernet cable? Some software doesn't connect over wireless and needs an ethernet cable. This is one possible reason for others with dongles not working.

You need to know this so that if you get a mobile broadband you need to know which hardware to choose, get a mobile router with an ethernet port if you know you absolutely need one.

To help establish what will work and what won't perhaps try a short trial connection using your current phone tethering, if that does work then you can be more confident that a cheap mobile router with wifi will work for you.

Your employer should be supporting you through this and enabling you to access your workplace systems however they clearly aren't doing that very well so it's down to you, put the effort in and get a connection however you can or alternatively take a long holiday without pay, you are in control of that decision.
