    I’m not convinced they are a similar skill set. 

    I don’t think it’s gender orientated as you do get female plumbers. I think the difference is that when you start on a hair cut it’s unlikely the job will suddenly turn out to be bigger than originally thought so you can easily agree a cost before it starts. 

    With a plumber until they start investigating they don’t know how much it will cost and how long it will take. As a result they can’t bill to the end of the job. This leads to people complaining.
