Advice on sofa insurance

Hi all
I'm new here so take it easy on me lol

So here's my story me and my wife bought a sofa from DFS back in september at the time we also bought guardsman insurance as the sofa was expensive and we wanted it covered. When buying the insurance the guy that sold it to us worked for DFS and had said if the sofa gets damaged then guardsman will try there best in the first instance to fix it but if it is damaged and there fix does not match the existing colour of the sofa then guardsman would replace the sofa basically he was saying if they could make it look new then they would replace it. I had questionable the salesman more and clarified this with him and he insisted that this would be the case.

So about 2 months ago my wife noticed that the cat had taken a liking to our sofa clawing and scratching the sofa down the the thread (cats not allowed near it now) so we called guardsman and spoke to them about it after sending them some pictures they sent us a letter saying we could either take a cash settlement figure which was a really low offer or they would replace the areas that are damaged but they could not guarantee that the patches would match the rest of the sofa. I informed them of what the salesman had told us and made a complaint but there response was to go and talk to DFS.

My question is do have anything to fall back on here? I feel that the original sales man miss sold us the insurance as he told us one thing and now we have went to claim they are telling us another

Anyways any questions I will try and answer and please be nice I know with everything going on at the moment this is not major or urgent just looking for advice on what to do

The cover will be detailed in the policy agreement.  Check to see what is covered.

Anything else the salesman may or may not have said can be disregarded.

Unfortunately some sales people will say whatever they think needs to be said in order to get a sale, and the commission which probably goes with that sale.  As zx81 says, all you can do is read the policy details - and get rid of the cat. :)
  • Thanks both for the advice

I'm going to have the sofa repaired and then once dfs is open I will give them a peice of my mind as I believe it's just pain wrong to lead people down this sort of path

This is what happened with PPI they sold insurance to people knowing full well what they were telling people was a lie

    Anyways thanks for the advice
