Barclays gave my card details away, thus enabed unathorised transaction

We moved to Spain  two and a half years ago. At that point i cancelled my AA membership. despite  cancelling  it i got charged £280 for another years membership 6 months later. I rang the AA, cmplained, and  they refunded the money and supposedly cancelled the membership again. Last month  i checked my bank statements, lo and behold  the AA had charged me for another years membership.. I rang them again, and again they have refunded my money , and claim the last person DIDNT cancel the membership, but now they have, allegedly.   The point about this was the second time the AA only had  the details of expired Barclays debit card, so when they tried to collect the money it failed, and Barclays provided them with my new card details, enabling the AA to take £300 out my acount with no authorisation whatsoever.  Have Barclays broken any laws?  Surely they have no authority to give my card details away like that.?

Same card number on the debit card. Continuous payment authority.

It sounds as if you have given the AA a CPA. This article should explain further, and give you pointers at sorting things: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/recurring-payments/

Barclays haven't broken any laws, and if you want their help, it would be better if you don't go in all guns blazing but with a request for assistance.

They surely do.  You gave the authority to them on opening the account.

AA are a nightmare, they did the same with me for 3 years. They always say they cancel it but next year they take it out again. They do refund though so no issues there but its a big hassle calling them all the time

Nope Barclays aren't at fault here, maybe the AA is. When you cancelled did you receive a notification of the cancellation ?

This has come up several times in the past

it is standard practice for banks to pass on your new debit card details to, for example, your CPA merchants when your old debit card expires.

When a retailer sets up a CPA on a card the retailer should be required to confirm this fact to the cardholder and apprise the cardholder of their rights and obligations.

Retailers typically set up a CPA silently without advising the cardholder that this is what they've done. So the cardholder assumes they've made a one-off payment on their card, not realising that a CPA has been set-up until they see an unexpected payment on their statement..

Just to be the bearer of more bad news, as you have a previous contract/agreement with the AA and this was a charge on your AA account, this won't be considered an unauthorised transaction, but a merchant dispute. The big difference is, banks are not under obligation to refund merchant disputes. Unauthorised transactions are generally where a third party gets hold of your card details and uses them.

As above, take this up with the AA.

I think you will find that the retailers do exactly what you suggest they should do. It will just be buried in the small print, or it's in the not-so-small print that the consumer chooses not to read.

Can confirm that AA uses CPA's.  Some others do as well - eg. Which (magazine/Consumer rights).  Legally Barclays can (and - I believe - have to) provide new details.  Error is with AA who should get a big slap for getting something wrong clearly fundamentally, this isnt a one off.
