Depositing a cheque into Santander at the Post Office?

I have a cheque to pay into Santander for my elderly father, and as our local branch is closed at the moment, it seems I can pay it in at the Post Office.
BUT do I need a special deposit envelope to do this and does my father need to endorse the cheque on the reverse - which he is unable to do as he is now in a care home and all visitors have been barred for the last few weeks.
Why British Gas sent a cheque for the credit on his account due to it being closed I've no idea.

Credit balances sitting on closed accounts will be refunded. Wouldn't be considered good business practice for BG to simply sit on the money.
The cheque simply needs to be paid into his own account. No need for endorsement.

Yes, you need an envelope like this:

If, as I suspect, you don't already have a supply of envelopes, you might be able to ask Santander, via online chat, to post some to you. You'll also need a printed paying in slip from your father's cheque book.

  • Don't the Post Office keep these envelopes? They certainly have Natwest ones,  you just have to ask. You do need a printed paying in slip though.

That envelope is so last year! They are now white & have a space for your account number on the front, available from Santander on line, our post office doesn't have them. You'll need a paying in slip as mentioned by the Badger
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Thanks for all  replies.  I will attempt to get an envelope or two from Santander.
edit: It appears I have to phone them:
"To use this service, you'll need to pre-order paying in slips and deposit envelopes by calling 0800 9 123 123."  which will be fun.
  • If he gives you his card and pin, you can deposit via Smart ATM at a branch outside.

OP, does your reference to getting your father to endorse a cheque signify that you don't have power of attorney? If so, it sounds like this may be worth doing, not for right now but for future management of his financial affairs....

I do have Power of Attorney but as Dad is still compos mentis I haven't really had to use it - I take instructions from him and do all the running around!.  Just sorting out his accounts which I've handled for years with his move to a nursing home.
