I am interested on making a couple of signs for the garden out off old pallet slats, looking around the house I have pretty much all I need paint, screws and rope but my hand writing is not great so any suggestions on how to get the writing to look decent or where I can get a stencil made with a quote I like that wont cost the earth?

I have a vinyl cutting machine so for a one off job outsource to someone that has a vinyl cutter or Cad cutting machine and there are lots of sellers advertising stencils on ebay. Just contact them and ask if they can make a custom one for you. Stencils can be harder to cut depending on the thickness of stencil required and I have outsourced a stencil before as I needed a thicker grade that my cutter would not be suitable for, but for 1 off cuts and cheap vinyl cutter should do.

The only thing with a stencil is it restricts you to the type of fonts you can use as parts of some letters won't be part of the cut if that makes sense, so a lot of standard stencil fonts don't look very attractive. If you use a sticky based vinyl as a stencil then you can peel off the inner parts of the letters and apply them to your wood sign by hand meaning you are able to use pretty much any font you like.
