It's wood.  So you can sand it!

If you  are selling/moving how much do you think your property has been devalued? The current situation we are in will probably knock thousands of the asking price. The cost of painting your fence  will be minor compared to this and cause you less hassle and you wont have to mention that your neighbour is a pain in the legal selling pack!
Our house went under offer a few days before lockdown, the buyer is happy to wait for now. So it's not a case of worrying it will devalue the property, it's such a minor thing. My point is the fence has been slightly ruined by their paint and we would like to rectify it, whether the house sells or not. I am mindful about neighbour relations so we wont press them to fix it, just need to know what we need to do remove the paint and it's up to them if they will cover the cost or not.

It's dark wood, would sanding it not turn it lighter?

I came on here to start a new thread about painting fences but thought i would jsut add my question to this thread...hope that is okay.  i want to paint `my fence` grey during this lockdown period....(i am aware that it may go through the slats to my neighbors side of the fence..but i have never spoken to her...she isnt very friendly and when the fence came down a while back the gardener i had in to do some handy jobs asked her unknowns to me whether she would share the cost of replacing and mending the fence ad she said no......so i am not about to ask her if `she minds` whether i paint my side of my own fence.
do you think it is okay to paint my side of my own fence - grey - it will doubtlessly go through the slats as not the newest of fences..and also i want to paint the `top` of it..the bit running along the top..its only about 4 foot......a friend said to me it isnt neighbourly to do that.....i soo want to paint it but unsure.......thank you

Dark wood?  What sort of timber is it - soft or hardwood? Have you stained it prior to varnish?

If you're selling, none of this matters, as you have bigger fish to fry. Nobody fails to buy a property because there are a few paint marks on a fence. When you get shot of the house, the idiot neighbour will go with it. Until then, they're lovely, thoughtful people and you've nothing to declare on the TA6 !

I thought for a minute you were our neighbour! However we asked our neighbour's pemission to paint their fence before starting, which is what your neighbour should have done with you for politeness if nothing else.  Regarding the paint appearing a lighter colour, have you got the sun shining on your side of the fence? Our light grey paint appears darker on the north facing side than the south facing side on the opposite side of the garden.

ETA our neighbours like the colour we chose and said they will paint their side of the fence the same colour. So we didn't have to worry about it seeping through.

If you paint yours a different colour, your neighbour will be treated to the runs from your paint appearing on his side..........
Oh gosh, now I'm wondering if you're our neighbour two doors down, who painted the neighbour on our right's fence grey, and our neighbour liked it so much he's painted theres too.

We didn't get asked permission, we just got told the day before, we painting the fence, just let us know if it seeps through. If I knew that, I would have possibly said yes but you need to rectify if anything does. And yes, I did rather spitefully think for a second, if we did paint it, I'm going to make sure I do it, I'm known for being very clumsy and heavy handed.

No it's not us, we only did the work last weekend and the neighbour on our right hasn't painted theirs yet. I think it could be a long time before they do, they're not the fastest to sort things.

Your fence, you can paint it however you want - sky blue pink with dots on if you want.
