You'll get a refund for any full month's remaining tax whilst your car is SORNed, no tax is due whilst it is on SORN.

    https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn
  • We had a look at making our VW camper SORN for a while but it would cost 40 quid to do it, so probably not worth it as we want to give it  a short run every few weeks/month to keep it turning over (just to go shopping, but go the long way round to get it warmed up properly).

I don't know if the charge is because it is a van or because we were sorning mid way through they tax year - I don't remember having to pay when we have done it before.

Are there any windtalkers on here who can translate that for me?
  • Ha ha - sorry!  It was late and I was tired.  Trying to work full time (self-employed key worker), as well as be a cleaner, cook, grocery shopper and delivery driver for relatives, and a mother and teacher to a 7 year old, as I'm sure many people are out there at this strange time...keep safe and sane :-)

Why is there a charge? Are you actually on the DVLA page?

You will lose the tax that you have paid for April, so there is no point declaring SORN until 30th April. (Do it in Office hours to be safe)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Are you sure you were looking at the DVLA website? There are third-party sites designed to look official, and offering to book tests, renew licences, etc. for you, and charging a fee.

We're SORNing our campervan and cancelling the insurance renewal until this is all over. The is definitely no charge for doing so.

You might be right - I have just looked at DVLA and can't see that it is coming up with a cancellation fee - I will wait until the last day of the month then cancel it, so we can take it for a short run before we sorn it.

No charge to take the tax off but, yes no point doing it now. Leave it to the end of the month but bare in mind when lockdown might be lifted
  • "bare in mind" - got thinking of !!!!!! then? It's 'bear in mind'
