Err lugs, that's a 54 megaBIT connection, not a megaBYTE... and although you could have a theoretical 4MB/s transfer, 1MB is actually a perfectly reasonable tangible rate for a wireless network.

I'm with you on the Belkin ones likely offering a slightly higher performance, but not a particularly noticable one - ie. your internet connection never needs to transfer anything like a mb per second anyway, and even when transferring files between machines the difference would be negligible.

These Netgear routers are an excellent deal, look pretty (well, compared to other wireless boxes anyway), and go well with Macs :)

Matthias - absolutely correct! Sorry, that's what happens when you post late at night when you should be in bed.
The point I was trying to make was that my Belkin adapter regularly reports a consistent speed throughput at around 50% signal strength, whereas my Netgear adapter sways from second to second between reporting 1Mb/sec up to 18Mb/sec and can't seem to settle into a consistent pattern. Doesn't appear too big a problem, but I still prefer my Belkin one.

  • Simon,

Your absolutely correct, it is a similar post. However it worth mentioning a few things about the G and the GT versions of this product.

    1) the GT is newer and is capable of using the latest 108 mb/s wireless protocols.
    2) the G is an older, more stable product (bugs now fixed). It's maximum capability is 54 mb/s.

Before you all flame me over the speeds, I'll just like to say these are speeds are the theoretical maximum speeds based on the protocol standards. The actual real life speeds using either unit will most likely never exceed 5 mb/s -that's a very conservative estimate! I've only ever managed 2 mb/s using my 54 mb/s D-Link wireless router .

Additional information about the deal on the GT version : The price has gone up to £87.99, but you can choose either a PC or USB adapter. Oh yes, delivery is free too.

    Hope this helps.

I have a Belkin modem/router and a Belkin USB wireless adapter in one machine and a Netgear USB wireless adapter in another. Both machines are about the same distance from my router but the Netgear one struggles to get anywhere near the same performance as my Belkin one. It sometimes reports signal strength at 1MB/sec (for a 54MB adapter that's not very good in my opinion).
Given the choice I wouldn't get the Netgear wireless adapter again, although it does shine a lovely shade of blue when it's turned on.

I'd seen a comparison on another forum that suggested thast the netgear router performed better than the belkin, as the signal passed through more walls/ longer distances. Does anyone else have experience of Belkin routers?

Speed may be a factor, but security should also be a consideration. WPA encryption is more secure than WEP. The WG111 USB adapter (54 Mbps) doesn't support WPA, the WG111T (108 Mbps version) does.

I found this a helpful article on home networking, with some information on wireless near the end: http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=604

Even the "slow" versions are many times faster than your internet connection, no worry there.
