I was under the impression it was 3 months as a tourist without needing to contact the French Embassy with a view to a residency permit?

Anyhow that doesn't help the original posters auntie.   She will probably be told she should have gone home but as she hasn't there may be other things she can do but will entail contacting the French authorities so hopefully she will have a friend over there to help her?
Thank you Tedber, as she hasn't got a liveable home to go to , it was a case of having to stay in France. She speaks quite good French plus there are people looking out for her. Hopefully we can get this sorted one way or another.

Assuming she's British she's still entitled to stay in France as long as she likes - up to the end of the year
    What rules are you using?
A citizen of the European Union has the inalienable right to stay, live, work, retire etc, in any EU member state without limitations. Although the British have now lost these rights (unless they hold a second citizenship of an EU state) their vestiges endure in most EU countries until the end of the year and final withdrawal.
