Sink plughole backnut broken how to remove?

So the backnut seems to have disintegrated on my basin and just had a new one arrive.
I'm trying to get the damn u bend off but it looks like it's been screwed at a slight angle or just really tightly and all that happens is that the plughole above spins.
Anyone got any ideas of how I can get enough reverse force onto the plughole without damaging it?
Thanks

A piece of wood with 2 large nails or bolts at a spacing which suits the holes in the plughole
a pair of long nosed pliers, with noses down the plughole holes
    Some variation of the above
