I'll ask the question when they come to take a look but even if they don't replace the carpet on the stairs it's still going to save me about £400 or so I suppose.

    Thanks for helping.

Is the stairs classed as an adjoining room? Would a door not separate a room?
You haven't provided sufficient clarity about the layout of your home and seem to be assuming we have as clear a grasp of it as you do. Are the stairs in your living room? Is there no doorway or just no door (because you removed it). I'm not entirely sure what "open and leads to the stairs means". I'm familiar with a door leading to a hallway and then stairs. Removing the door wouldn't stop the hall being an adjoining room.
All that said, and rather than guessing, if you're going to claim anyway get on with and put your case to your insurer. But, on the available evidence I'd say it's more likely than not that they will decline to pay to replace the stair carpet.

Nope, no hall way or door removed. The stairs are pretty much in the living room.
