If a paediatric registrar can redeploy as HCA then I don't see a problem with a staff nurse or sister doing the same.

certain parts of the NHS are eerily quiet at the moment - I work in out of hours primary care and the number of calls has plummeted - we are still working but far less busy than usual

I work as a HCA, they cannot redeploy me anywhere due to the hospital currently being very quiet.
Hence my query on furlough. I have said I would do anything they have even not in my current role but still nothing available.

Unfortunately the scheme is to protect jobs, although granted has since change and with the way the scheme is set up it is benefiting the private sector workers and not public sector workers. The only good news is that you will probably have a job to return to.

As a substantive member of staff, they can’t just send you home and stop paying you.  Talk to your union rep and keep turning up to work, I’d say.

  • What's going on at the NHS then? Have they taken on a load of extra staff in preparation for being super-busy and the levels of Covid patients haven't hit the numbers they had planned for yet?

No they have pretty much cancelled all other work, except for emergency work. So lots of people in specialist roles without the need of them. Not all will have the right training to be redeployed to the covid wards.

I completely feel your pain. I'm a bank nurse who mainly works in a&e and it is so extremely slow. For the first time in 4 years on the bank I am struggling to get shifts due to the fact that all annual leave has been cancelled and people have been recalled from career breaks etc so loads of staff knocking around now. Add to that the only patients coming in are either covid or traumas theres not a lot for us to do.

I know as soon as lockdown is over it is going to go back to how it was pre covid plus the covid wave is going to go back up again. Im just hoping I manage to get shifts. Im sorted for this week and next then will have to play it by ere.

As you are on a contract though they should have to find you work to do or let you come in and drink tea all day or pay you to stay home. It is only temporary so they wont be looking at redundancy as we will be back to capacity soon enough.

I’m rather hoping that this has at least teaches people that A&E should only be used for its intended purposes rather than I’ve had a sniffle for a few days and it’s the weekend... but I don’t see it somehow. Hopefully your shifts will pick up soon!
