Marshmallow car insurance!

  • If i had another choice I wouldn’t go for them, they look fine in price comparing to other companies but when you actually need their help be prepared to go through 4 different other companies.
Had an accident a week ago where their engineer deemed it as a write off, no claim available as the cars market value is lower than the excess on my policy plus they are telling me I still have to pay them the full premium.
Not to mention i am disposing of the car myself

Call me old fashioned but I would always avoid these web 2.0 "insurers" with daft names. If you want insurance, go to an insurance company, with offices and staff and other things that might be useful.
  • I was really impressed with them - but as people say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating - let's hope I don't have to eat !
  • I made a mistake of buying this insurance without reading this post.
But does anyone know why are they asking for an identity document to be uploaded with a selfie?
This sounds very strange to me. As no insurance until now have asked this. Additionally, they didn't mention about this document uploaded initially till they deducted my money. Can anyone guide me?
    Can i cancel the insurance?

It's possibly when they ran an identity check on you via credit reference agencies you did not come up so they want to check you are who you claim you are
A lot of companies do this now

I'm also trying to buy a car and Marshmallow is by far cheaper than other companies (e.g. £1050 compared to the next company which is £1600).
I'm new to buying/using cars in the UK. My understanding is that in case of an accident, the one who WANTS to make a claim should call his own insurance company, right?

Suppose that Marshmallow doesn't answer the calls or give a damn. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if my own car is worth around £1500 or so, then it seems reasonable to insure it with an ignorant insurance company if it saves £550 of insurance costs annually; because:
    • If the other car/driver has severe damage and it's my fault, then he has to make a claim. It's his insurer's business to contact my insurance company and I don't need to be worried if my insurer is hard to reach by phone. I won't need to make a claim in that case, right?
    • If it's NOT my fault and my car has some damage, then the worst-case scenario is that my insurer won't pick up the phone (to initiate the claim process to get the compensation from the insurance company of the other driver). Nonetheless, my car is not much more expensive than the money I'm saving each year from the cheap insurance cost.
So my understanding is that it's economical and reasonable to insure a car worth less than, say, £2000, using a CHEAP but IGNORANT insurance company which is £500 cheaper than any other insurer.

    Am I getting it wrong?

The terms of your insurance will almost surely require you to inform them of any accidents or incidents regardless of whether or not you want to make a claim. Which means, with a bad insurer, dealing with a load of tedious phone calls and being asked to repeatedly describe the accident to several different people.
You can claim directly against the third party, possibly using a lawyer of your own choice. But going that way you'll only get anything if the accident is held to be at least partly their fault. And like I said, you still have to deal with your own insurer anyway.

If only life was that simple.  Say you cause a accident, the 3rd party's insurance company cannot contact your insurance
they issue a court claim in YOUR name.  You pass that onto your insurance who ignore that also and you fail to turn
up in court to defend and you lose. Your liable for all the costs, but your insurance cover that assuming you can contact them.

If your insurance is bad then you may regret that choice.

Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • I'm in my second year with Marshmallow.  I can't fault them tbf. I read some poor reviews about their claims process but they moved underwriters at the beginning of this year so they now manage claims themselves. They've been great for me.
