Related meters - Economy 9? Economy 7 and standard meter?

Hi all,

I was looking for some advice regarding the meter at a property I have recently purchased, as I am trying to get an energy provider set up. The property is electricity only. The meter has a sticker on it that says 'ECONOMY 9' and also says at the bottom 'Property of EDF Energy'. I believe EDF were the previous/most recent supplier.

I was getting a quote from Green (green.energy) and I was unsure whether to select that I have an Economy 7 meter, so I got some advice on their live chat and the advisor stated the following:

"The property has related meters, one of them MPAN 1200051570471 is an economy 7 meter (02) profile class. The other one MPAN 1200051604856 is a standard meter (01) profile."

He then advised me to call them to get both set up. Can anyone shed some light on this meter setup for a complete novice? Am I not able to switch between providers as and when comparing quotes later down the line? Do you have any recommendations as to how to proceed with choosing a supplier keeping in mind this meter setup?

Any guidance and/or opinions are welcomed! Thanks in advance

You need to register initially with the existing supplier, EDF.

Discuss with them the options available - they will have a specialist team that deals with your type of metering.

The advice of this forum, as it is generally, is not to attempt to switch supplier with your complex metering; attempts to do so invariably end in tears.

If you want to have a choice of supplier, you will need to have either a single rate meter or E7 meter installed, but that may have knock on effects for your current installation. As I say, EDF have a specialist team who should be able to assist you further.

Thanks for the advice. I'll contact EDF as you have suggested, and I thought that may be the case regarding switching supplier with complex metering so I'm glad I asked. Thanks again!
  • Profile Class 01 - Domestic Unrestricted - home where you run a home based business
Profile Class 02 – Domestic Economy 7 - ‘differential tariff’ and is put in place to help smaller energy users save money between Peak and Off-Peak times.

You are on a deemed contract from the moment you use any domestic energy, this is the old supplier's tenant's or owner's active supply. You need to register with the old existing supplier and then move contract if you choose. Best of luck.

You must register immediately with your existing supplier, otherwise you'll be on a 'deemed' tariff which will be hideously expensive.  As you're in the London area your Distribution Network Operator is UK Power Networks and their website will tell you which company supplies you, which may not necessarily be EDF.
Your E7 lower rate times are likely to be 2230 - 0030 and 0230 - 0730 GMT. Check the relevant meter to see exactly when it switches over.
Unfortunately you've made a bad choice if you can't get gas: electric heating will either be very expensive (E7 with storage heaters) or extremely expensive (single rate with heating on demand).
You need to understand how your existing system is configured: investigate to see which circuits are supplied by each meter. The strange set up may have been at attempt to get a low night rate for storage heaters on the E7 meter but having the 13A sockets and lighting on a single rate meter to escape the daytime surcharge on E7 rates. Not sure whether you can mix and match suppliers by having two meters (and two standing charges), others may be able to advise.  What suited the previous owner may not necessarily be best for you.
The bad news is that you probably need to install a new heating system if you're going to stay there a long time.

There shouldn't be any issue with a deemed tariff as we aren't moving in to the property until work has been completed, therefore no energy consumption. I'm currently trying to get the provider and tariff sorted so that work can begin.

The property is a flat within a block, so there was no bad choice to be made regarding gas supply as it is non-existent. The lease terms do not allow for a new heating system to be installed, so it is what it is. Apologies, I should have mentioned these details previously. Thanks for the UK Power Networks link, I've submitted a requested to find out exactly who the supplier is!

Just received two emails from UK Power Networks regarding both meters at the property, both state they are supplied by EDF.

So I guess my first port of call is contacting EDF, and from the sounds of it the meter set up is somewhat complex so would you recommend remaining with EDF as the supplier? If I'm honest I would prefer to avoid any major headaches so the more straightforward approach is what I would like.

As said above, you must register and open an account with EDF before you can do anything else. You then need to evaluate what you've got and try and work out the best options. As you've got two meters you'll be stung with two lots of standing charges (one for each meter point).

Complex metering systems are usually a lot more expensive that either a single rate or plain E7 tariff  so you need to do your sums. Most suppliers are trying to phase them out but they don't make it easy for customers to change. You need to try to speak to the Complex Metering Team as the the usual person customer service won't have a clue (and may not even know that they've got a complex metering team)

You need to establish how your place is wired and how the heating, hot water and other circuits are supplied because you'll probably find that heating and hot water is from the E? meter and the lighting  and other stuff is from the other one. However some of these complex systems also have a third rate which allows the use of supplementary heating at a different cost to the timed E? supply so if you want to change then you need to sort it all out.

Great advice, thanks! I'll be attempting to do what you have suggested. Wish me luck!
