How to remove modern fireplace surround

Our fireplace is what I would call standard modern house issue surround. It's white (wood) with a piece of marble (or looks like it) in the centre.
I cannot work out how it is attached to the wall as I want to remove it and get something more contemporary. Anyone give me any ideas of where to start please. I blame coronavirus for being pressed into starting this as I had hoped to put it off for a couple of years. Mrs Parcival however wants it done.......

Normally there will be four brackets, two either side, which enables the surround to be screwed to the wall.

To find the brackets / screws look for any slight imperfections in the wall by the side of the surround or run a flat / thin knife from the top down each side until you hit the bracket. You will need to chip away the plaster that was put over it, unscrew the screw, then move the knife down until you find the second one. Repeat for the other side.

You can tap the marble and find out if it's solid or just a fake wood insert.

  • Or there might be two brackets and they might be on the inside or outside of the surround, or it could be hung on hooks, or just fastened in with 'no more nails' or similar.

    Good luck.

Personally I would just rip it off the wall with a crow bar and make good the damage I caused.
