What do mean by inspected ? Meter reading or what?
Do you read your meter at least monthly ? If you don't no-one else will.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Ofgem have abandoned the requirements for regular meter inspections https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications-and-updates/decision-reforming-suppliers-meter-inspection-obligations . So nobody has any obligation to carry out the inspections any more.If you think your meter may be faulty or dangerous, contact your supplier. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.2 -
Working properly in what respect? If you get your boiler serviced every year then a gas tightness test will be done to ensure no leaks. A working pressure test will be done to ensure correct pressures and also a gas rate will be done, this involves a bit of maths worked out on what the gas meter is reading. Any anomalies would be found here.1

Last time my gas meter was supposedly checked (last year), the chap looked at it, made a note of the reading, and left.
I'm sure the story of "we need to make a safety check" was a ploy to get a meter reader to see whether I was being truthful in my monthly reporting of consumption and that I hadn't fitted some kind of bypass. (My circumstances have changed leading to consequent fall in usage.)

Up until 2016, suppliers were required to "inspect" meters every two years. In practice, that was just a meter reading and a quick visual inspection to see if the meter looked like it had been tampered with. Nobody ever tests meters for accuracy unless the customer complains. There was no meaningful safety check, either. Instead, the suppliers have successfully persuaded the courts that they have no responsibility for the safety of their equipment in your house. If it sticks, force it.

Meters are still being replaced - mostly with smart meters. But that's got nothing to do with inspections. Just how old the records say each meter is.
If it sticks, force it.
